Mom Vlogger Hacks & Tips | How to Grow Your Youtube Channel

I’ve been on YouTube for a few years now and I’ve gotten more into it now that I’ve become a mom. I know a lot of moms are sharing their own stories on there and it’s become such a lovely mommy community that I love being a part of. Here are some mom vlogger hacks and tips that I feel you should know.

I’m no expert in this YouTube world, but I do feel like I’ve learned quite a few helpful tips along the way. 

I’m not going to talk to you about generic advice (like be yourself, have fun with it and share what you would like to watch). Those are still good tips, but I want to get into specifics and practical things you can implement today.

Here are my 9 mom vlogger hacks:

1. Use TubeBuddy to help you make searchable videos

If you have not used the TubeBuddy add on for YouTube, you need to give it a go. It’s free and so, so helpful. Once you download it from their website, you can go into YouTube and search the keywords you would like to have in your title. Then on the right side it will show you how effective the keywords are and some suggestions for improvement.

2. Your titles should include a searchable part (using TubeBuddy) and a clickable part

I don’t mean use clickbait, cause that never works well on YouTube. What I mean is use something that catches people’s interest and makes them want to click your video. But make sure that it is true to what is included in the said video. And then also use the searchable part that makes it easier for your videos to pop up in search.

An example of this would be: “I can’t believe my toddler did this! Day in the Life of Mom and Son”. So you can see in this example how it’s got both the searchable part and the catchy part.  

3. Choose the right tags

You can also use TubeBuddy for this, but I think it’s helped my videos a lot the fact that I’ve started using less generic tags and switched them for more specific ones.

A few examples that I’ve used: day in the life of a stay at home mom, daily cleaning routine 2019, 19 month old sleep regression etc. These work much better in search than something very generic like “vlog” or “mom”.  

4. Include your tags in the description

Now that you’ve chosen some good tags, make sure you include them in your description as well. I don’t mean copy paste a random block of text with the tags, but rather formulate a coherent text describing your video. Also make sure you include as many tags as possible in there.  

5. Make sure to post on Instagram & drive traffic to your videos

If you look behind the scenes of your channel, you can check out where your traffic outside of YouTube is coming from. A few weeks ago I started sharing my videos on my instagram stories and it’s been quite effective in getting me some views from it. The way I do this is I post my thumbnail or a snippet of my video in the stories and then I will leave the link to that video in my profile.

Make sure you also share your videos on your other social media accounts, like twitter, instagram, pinterest or the like.   

6. Have clear and easy to read thumbnails

Thumbnails are one of the most important parts of your video, since it’s what people see first when they come across your video. I would suggest making sure the text is easy to read.

I go for a simple font and I put either a shadow behind it, an outline or a coloured bar. Anything to make that text stand out. I will make a separate video + blog post about making thumbnails soon, in case you’d like to see exactly how I do that.  

7. Check your click through rate & view duration. Those are key!

I’m still getting the hang of analytics myself. But one thing I’ve heard a lot is to try and improve your CTR (click through rate). CTR means out of the people who see your video in their feed or search – how many actually click on it. And how long they stay to watch the video.

These two combined will help your video be promoted by YouTube more in their suggested feature, hence more views and subscribers.   

8. Post frequently & be consistent

Out of all my mom vlogger hacks, this is something I’m trying my hardest to achieve. I strive to post 3 times a week, on Monday, Wednesday and Friday (although I’ve been a bit MIA this week since we’re preparing for our big move).

You don’t have to post that frequently if you think you can’t commit to it. However, I think posting at least once a week is so important. That way you don’t become forgettable and people keep coming back for more.  

9. Respond to comments

Building a little community, your own tribe, the people who have something in common with you. Isn’t that the best part about putting your story out there in the online world?

I think responding to people’s comments shows that you appreciate them. Plus it helps you build relationships with other moms or youtubers. I’ve made so many mommy friends through my channel and it’s been an amazing experience.
